2008-2009 Board of Governors Biographies
Lisa Alter is a
partner in the law firm of Alter & Rosen in New York City, where her clients
include some of America's greatest musical estates including those of Ira
Gershwin, Hoagy Carmichael, Vernon Duke, and Billy Strayhorn. She has served as
adjunct professor of law at Rutgers University and Benjamin Cardozo Law School,
and lectures frequently regarding domestic and international copyright law. In
2003, Lisa co-founded Girls Learn InternationalT, Inc. with her two daughters,
establishing a new force for universal girls' education and human rights. Lisa
serves as President of Girls Learn International, and President of the Shana
Alexander Charitable Foundation. She is Co-President of the Fire Island
Synagogue in Seaview, Fire Island, NY. Lisa has also served on The Childcare
Action Committee in New York City, and the Board of Education in Westfield, New
Jersey. She received her undergraduate degree from Wesleyan University and
earned her JD from NYU Law School.
Keith Cox is a serial entrepreneur.
He founded and currently serves as Managing Partner of Resort Equities, a luxury shared ownership resort and
real estate company. Prior to that, Keith founded Brainstorm Ventures, an early stage venture capital firm
that invested in OpenTable.com and Zappos.com among numerous others. Keith created and was CEO/CFO of World
Wrapps Restaurants until its acquisition and founded Pacific Catch, an up and coming restaurant chain based
in San Francisco. Keith is a graduate of UC Santa Barbara and has an MBA from Stanford. He worked with Booz
Allen & Hamilton and Deloitte and Touche before striking out on his own. Keith joined the World of Children
Board of Governors in March of 2008 and now Chairs the Audit Committee.
Francis L. Fraenkel
is a native of New Orleans that has now lived in New York City for over 30
years. He is currently Managing Director of Neuberger Berman, a leading money
management firm in NY. In the 1970's, Francis was a Partner at Loeb Rhoades &
Co., and then joined Shearson American Express where he served in numerous
positions until resigning as Chairman and CEO of the Lehman Management Co. in
1989. In 1991, he founded Delta Capital Management which was subsequently
acquired by Neuberger Berman. Francis is a graduate of the Tulane University
School of Business where he was named outstanding Alumnus in 1983. Mr. Fraenkel
joined the World of Children Board of Governors in 2007 and now serves on the
Development Committee.
James Gold is currently the President and CEO of Bergdorf Goodman, New York
City's venerable fashion retailer. Jim joined Neiman Marcus Stores in 1991 and
quickly rose through the ranks to hold positions of increasing responsibility.
By 1997 he was promoted to Vice President, and in 2002 became Senior Vice
President and GMM. He moved to Bergdorf Goodman in 2004. Jim is a graduate of
Tulane University and the Harvard Business School. Jim joined the World of
Children Board of Governors in 2007 and now serves on the Communications
Committee
Kay Isaacson-Leibowitz is a leading fashion retail expert who currently sits on
the Board of Directors of GUESS?, Inc. (NYSE) and Coldwater Creek (NASDAQ). She
retired from management in 2003 after 10 years as the Executive Vice President
and GMM of Victoria's Secret (Limited Brands) and prior to that as Acting
President of Banana Republic. Kay's career has spanned some 38 years in the
fashion industry. Kay is a past Chair of the Advisory Board of The City
University of New York Honors College. She has also been involved in
philanthropy for a long time, having been an early supporter of Brian's House
for children with HIV/AIDS in Dallas, Texas and a Board member of Chances For
Children which was founded by the Duchess of York. Kay is co-founder of World
of Children and is married to its founder, Harry Leibowitz. Kay joined the
World of Children Board of Governors in 2001 and she now Chairs the Nominating
Committee, and serves on the Development Committee and the Communications
Committee.
Harry Leibowitz is the Founder of World of Children. Harry began his business
career with the Procter & Gamble Company where he held numerous marketing
management positions. He left in 1972 to join ESMARK and spent more than 8
years living and working abroad in Europe and Canada, and left as EVP. He
struck out on his own in 1981 founding Partners In Marketing, which he sold in
2002 to devote full time to World of Children. Harry has BA and MA degrees from
Brooklyn College, City University of NY and did his doctoral work at Wayne
State University. He has been recognized for his work with children by
receiving the P&G Alumni Humanitarian Award in 2007, The Reclaiming Youth
International Child Advocacy Award in 2006 and the Starr Commonwealth Child
Advocacy Award in 1999. He is currently Chairman of the Board of World of
Children.
Ranjan Manoranjan is the Chief Executive Officer of 3SG Corporation and
President of QuickAccountant, headquartered in Dublin, Ohio. He was awarded the
Ellis Island Medal of Honor in May, 2005, by the National Ethnic Coalition of
Organizations (NECO) for his dedication to his ethnic heritage through American
society. Ranjan currently serves on the Columbus-Franklin County Finance
Authority. He also served on the Executive Board of the Ohio Society of CPAs
and is currently on their Statewide Political Endorsement Committee. Appointed
by the Governor of the State of Ohio, he served a six-year term on the State of
Ohio Board of Tax Appeals. Ranjan earned his CPA designation from the
Accountancy Board of Ohio in 1980. He holds degrees from the Institute of
Chartered Accountants in Columbo, Sri Lanka, and The Institute of Cost &
Management in London, England. Ranjan joined the World of Children Board of
Governors in January, 2004 and serves as Treasurer and as a Member of the
Executive Committee.
Maxine Martens love affair with
brands began when she moved to New York to join Elizabeth Arden as National Sales
Merchandising Manager. Maxine's international career took off when she moved to
London as Area Director, Europe and then became Arden's International
Marketing Director. During her time overseas she had the opportunity to live in
Rome, Cairo and Paris. After 11 years abroad, Maxine returned to the United
States and became President of a direct response company. She has held or managed
many of the positions for which she now recruits. Maxine began her search career at
Rene Plessner Associates specializing in entrepreneurial businesses within the beauty
and fashion industries. Then Maxine was a Managing Director at Herbert Mines Associates
for several years prior to the establishment of Martens & Heads!. Maxine divides her
time between the US and Europe working with clients and candidates.
Maxine and her family are keen supporters of children's causes and
have been long active in improving the lives of children in need. Among other
organizations she has supported, she is proud to have been involved with the
Real Life Children's Ranch in Okeechobee, Florida, for over 50 years.
Anthony E. Meyer, is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of privately-held
Meyer and Co. LLC, a diversified merchant banking and venture capital firm. He
also serves as President and CEO of Ocean Road Advisors, Inc. a family office
management and investment company which manages a portfolio in excess of $800
million. Tony was a co-founder of the real estate, private equity and venture
capital investment affiliates of two leading global investment and finance
organizations, Lazard Frères & Co. (in 1994) and Trammell Crow Company (in
1984). He has also served as the founding CEO for three entrepreneurial
companies as well as the non-executive chairman of several public and private
operating businesses. In 2002, he was the founding investor and chief executive
officer of the predecessor company to Extend Health, Inc., the leading provider
of defined contribution healthcare plans for corporate America, where he is
today the lead Director. Tony is a past Chairman of the Board of Literacy
Instruction for Texas (L.I.F.T.) and has served as a Board member of the Young
Leadership Cabinet of the United Jewish Appeal and currently he serves on the
Advisory Board of the Honors College of CUNY, the Board of Governors of the
American Jewish Committee and the Board of Directors of the New York City
chapter of YPO International. Tony graduated from Harvard College in 1982 as a
John Harvard Scholar and received his MBA from Harvard Business School with
honors in 1984. Tony joined the World of Children Board of Governors in 2005
and serves as Vice Chair, and as a Member of the Communications Committee.
Arlin E. Ness served Starr Commonwealth, a nationally and internationally
recognized child care organization, for over 38 years, serving as president
from 1981 to 2004. He is immediate past president of the International
Association of Social Educators, headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, founding
chair of the board for Reclaiming Youth International and a founding board
member of the National Resource Center for the Healing of Racism. He
co-authored the book Re-educating Troubled Youth: Powerful Environments for
Teaching and Treatment and more recently, No Disposable Kids. Arlin is a
graduate of the University of Iowa School of Social Work, holds an Honorary
Doctorate of Laws degree from Albion College and has been a Mawby Visiting
Fellow at Oxford University in England. Arlin is Chairman Emeritus of World of
Children and now Chairs the Development Committee.
Grace Nichols recently retired as President and CEO of Victoria's Secret Stores
where she served since 1986 when the brand's sales were only $100 million. She
is credited with building Victoria's Secret into the mega-brand that it is
today with sales of over $4 billion. Prior to joining Victoria's Secret, Grace
worked at Carter Hawley Hale in Los Angeles where she held positions of
increasing responsibility until she left in 1986 with the title of VP and GMM
for women's apparel. Currently Grace serves on the boards of New York & Company
(NYSE) and Pacific Sunwear Co. (NYSE). She joined the World of Children Board
of Governors in 2007 and now Chairs the Communications Committee.
Jerald S. Politzer is the CEO of the New York-based fashion retailer
Loehmann's, and has been an executive in both retailing and venture capital for
over 35 years. Jerry served for 16 years with Hecht Company and left as
Executive Vice President to become President and CEO of G. Fox Stores in 1986.
Subsequent to that he spent 9 years with Melville Corporation where he was an
Executive Vice President. Most recently, Jerry was with Barrington Capital
Group, was an Executive Vice President at Filene's Basement and President of
Value City. Jerry is a graduate of the University of Maryland. He joined the
Board of Governors of World of Children in 2007 and now serves on the
Nominating Committee
Roberta Romberg received her B.A. with honors from Jackson College (Tufts
University), her J.D. from New York University School of Law, and an advanced
diploma in graduate legal studies from the University of Stockholm (Sweden).
She has over thirty years of experience as both outside and inside legal
counsel and a senior executive for a wide range of businesses, ranging from
mature Fortune 100 public companies to new ventures, as well as two periods of
government service, focusing on general business and corporate law, securities,
aviation and business aircraft, and labor and employment law. Roberta currently
lives in the San Francisco Bay area and practices law there with the firm of
Allen Matkins. Roberta joined the World of Children Board of Governors in 2007
and now serves as Secretary, and as a Member of the Executive Committee.
Susanna Steinberg retired from a 27 year career in retail human resources,
which included training, development and recruiting responsibilities. She
received her BA from Brooklyn College in 1960 and attended the New York
University graduate school of Business Administration. Her current
philanthropic and community activities include serving as a trainer in English
as a Second Language (ESL) and Board member of the Smuin Ballet. Susanna
resides in San Francisco, California with her husband Michael. She joined the
World of Children Board of Governors in 2007 and Chairs the Compensation
Committee, and serves on the Development Committee.
Development Director
Laura Cox offers individuals, foundations and corporations the opportunity to make a profound difference in children's lives. She has been connecting financial supporters with children's causes for the past five years. As President of the Foundation for Reed Schools, she raised money for underfunded California public schools. Now, as Development Director for World of Children, she raises money to ensure that the award and grant programs are fully funded. Her experience began in the corporate world, working in strategic planning for Avon Products, brand management for Del Monte Foods and acquisition analysis for National Medical Enterprises. She earned her MBA from Northwestern's Kellogg Graduate School and her Bachelor of Arts degree from University of California, Santa Barbara.
Executive Director
Lynn Wallace Naylor builds brands for non-profit organizations and foundations, and specializes in leading organizational change during high-growth phases. She has led brand strategy and marketing efforts for major museums, large tourism destinations and regional economic development campaigns. Her recent west coast projects include executive positions with The Presidio Trust, Sony's Metreon Entertainment Center and the historic wine region - Livermore Valley Wine Country. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the E. W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University. Lynn joined World of Children in February 2007, and was named a 2007 Woman of Distinction by the East Bay Business Times.
